The Big Dig

A team of staff, parents and pupils (and dogs) took part in the Old Dalby community project, The Big Dig, over the weekend of 19th and 20th October. We dug a test pit on our school field to see what hidden treasures we could find. Ours was one of 9 test pits positioned all around the village.

We managed to find pottery from the Victorian era back to the 17th Century and then we hit very thick clay. Buried within the clay were fossils that were 100s of millions of years old. We found belemnites, ammonites and a tooth from either a big fish or a shark (we're going with shark!). All our finds, along with those found around the village, are going to be looked at closely by archaeologists from the University of Lincoln who will report back to us all with their findings - we can't wait!
